Tony Horton was born on July 2, 1958 in Westerly, a small town in Rhode Island, United States. His birth name was Anthony Sawyer Horton Jr. and he was one of three children born to his parents, Jean Horton and Anthony Sawyer Horton. His two siblings were both girls. His father, Anthony Sr. was in the United States Army where he served for three years as a 1st Lieutenant. His years of service meant he was stationed at various bases across the country. This meant that his family moved around a lot and by the time Anthony Jr. was 10, the Hortons had already moved more than five times. Anthony Jr. and his sisters were mostly raised in Trumbull, Connecticut. His dad being a member of the armed forces was fit, but not necessarily obsessed.

Tony wasn’t one for fitness at a young age as he described himself as a ’98 kilo weakling’ with a speech impediment. So how did he turn things around? While attending the University of Rhode Island, Tony Horton became interested in his physical fitness and was drawn to weightlifting. After graduating, he took a road trip and soon found himself in California where he decided to start a career on screen. While working to shape himself, Horton met a senior executive at age 20. th Century Fox and he became his personal trainer, working out of his garage with each class billed at $20.

In California, he joined the World Gym located in Venice, California. The gym also boasted an Arnold Schwarzenegger membership. This is where Tony started taking notes as he watched the other workouts. Soon after his work with the executive, his clientele began to grow and soon included artists like Tom Petty, Annie Lennox, Billy Idol, among others.

Horton was clearly aiming for where he aspired to be. The training and fitness sessions focused on balance, speed and flexibility. yoga. Which would lay the groundwork for his famed P90X fitness program and its sequels.

On his way to becoming a household name in bodyFitness, Horton first worked as a fitness trainer to stars in the entertainment industry and beyond. Horton first joined musician Tom Petty, who followed Horton’s system and very quickly took on incredible form. Tony quickly got calls from different stars and soon established ASH Fitness in Santa Monica.

Touchstone Pictures retained Horton to package the entire cast of the film, The 13th Warrior which Antonio Banderas was a part of. Tony met Beach Body President Carl Daikeler in 1996. Two years later, when Beach Body was founded in 1998, Tony was asked to pass on his knowledge. Great Body Guaranteed, its first Beach Body product, was followed by many other products, including the famous P90X.
