Bell was born the only child of Kristen Anne Bell by Lorelei (née Frygier) and Tom Bell on July 18, 1980 in Huntington Woods, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. However, she has four half-siblings and two stepsisters from her parents’ second marriage after their divorce when she was just two years old. Her father is an actor and CBS news director while her mother is a nurse. She is of Polish, German, Scottish and Irish descent.

Bell attended Shrine Catholic High School, where she joined the school’s drama and music club. However, she had already started acting, playing a role in Raggedy Ann and Andy while also appearing in a number of television commercials. Her mother had hooked her up with a talent agency and signed her up for a private acting class to help her pursue a career in entertainment.

After high school, Kristen Bell moved to New York City to study musical theater at the renowned Tisch School of the Arts. In 2001, in her senior year, she took on the role of Becky Thatcher in the Broadway production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer . She then played an uncredited role in Pootie Tang (2001), although her scene was later edited out.

In 2002, after appearing in the Broadway revival of The Crucible , she moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue more roles.
